In my rush to get to work this morning for an early start, forgot to turn the rotating feeder back around on my tri-coloured parrot finch cage. The male was still there but the hen managed to get out past the feeder and past the netting in my bird area. No sign of her this afternoon and no idea what time she would have got out. pretty p'd-off with myself.

It's a pretty ordinary feeling when a bird dies, but even worse when its 100% your own fault.

Yes it sure is and as much as anyone says "accidents happen" it doesn't make you feel any better .

Believe me I know what your going through ,I tend to have fails of the epic kind quite often , anyhoo with a whole lotta luck she will come back but if she doesn't dont kick yourself too much

Thanks deb, i'll keep an eye out for her, but I know that there is little hope she'll be back.

Well that was an overreaction if i've ever had one!!!

I just went for a lap to see if I could see her and she was in the cage!!!!! I assumed because there was a bit of a gap near the feeder that she had got out, but she must have been in the nest??? Very odd time of day for her to be there... all I can say is YAY and phewwww.

Good one Ian. Sometimes you get lucky- learn a lesson AND not have to pay for it! Now all you need is a nest full of youngsters.

Yep, lesson learnt. Project for the weekend is also to fix the bird netting so that if she did get out of her cage she would still be contained.

In 1987 (24 years and 1 day ago to be precise...) we had wild winds in Melb. Blew my 12'x6' aviary half way across the back yard. Been paranopid about no floors in aviaries ever since. Lost lots of birds (finches & parrots). Pulled aviary upright and up against house after re-capturing the longtail hen who remained hiding in her upturned flight. Two mornings later opened kitchen blinds to discover our two red-rumps back in the aviary, they had crawled between brick wall and aviary wall and in through a hole in the twisted wire and frame. Safely home, they were contentedly singing and having a feed .

Glad your story ended happily. We heard the missing longtails for a few days and likewise the blue wings but for the most part it was a sad ending for us.
