My Stars Keep Abandoning the nest

Hi, I have a pair of stars which everyone tells me are easy to breed but they lay eggs, sit and then walk away. They have seed green feed on say a weekly basis with sprouted seed 2 or 3 days a week. Any thought anyone.

Can you supply a bit more information about size of aviary, what other birds are in with them, how old are the stars, are they definitely a hen and a cock, etc.

Hi, Its a 3x2.5 mtr aviary with Chestnut, Long Tail & Blue Faced in there as well. Have a pair if Turks also.

Too many birds for that size avairy. I might also be looking at night frights such as mice , large spiders ect. If the turks are looking at breeding, theres your problem,i have seen some hens become really aggressive and chase finches from the sheltered section where they are nesting.

I'd say increase the green food to daily, offer them some live food daily, & consistancy is just as important as quantity, small regular feeds, say twice daily (morning & afternoon) rather that a large one every so often,every couple of days. Even if you can't do it twice daily, atleast once a day but be consistant, & increase the quantity a needed.

Turks can be quite nasty little birds especially at breeding time .
Maybe if you can house them away from the finches as well as up the green food , this may help .

They can be very fussy about nest inspections. Some of mine seem to desert even if they think I've seen the nest!

Hmmm. Going to expand the aviary which will make it about 5.5m x 2mts. That might be my best option at the moment. Will keep part to plant in it which should keep them happy also - I hope.

I'm with Sam - if you know that much about their nesting behaviour then you probably know too much. Try totally hands and eyes off - appreciate that a nest exists but stay away from it completely.

Have you thought about instead of expanding the existing avairy just building a new one so you can keep your finches and parrotts seperately?
