So how does this work folks ....
I purchased a pair of normal ( coughs ) King Quail and this is the result of the first mating .



Which brings me to my question ... Would the coloured ( not normal ) babies be produced naturally from a normal pair in a clutch this size ORRRRR did I get normals split to whatever mutation has arisen in the young ????

Yes pet shop bought birds so not so surprised if they are splits .

My understanding is that the parents must each be split for the mutation showing up. Ive had "normal" looking birds produce silvers.

Yep, both parents are split for silver. Don't get them all started again deb .

and cinnamon too apparently. the one in the pic, on the left, you can see the reddish stripes

Same with mine. Two normal pairs produce normals silvers and cinnimons

Oh well it is a mixed bag then isnt it ... Anyhoo this will be fun watching them grow and colour up . These are my first quail ( apart from one disaster but that's another story ).

They are up and running around the aviary ... very trusting of humans at this age I see.

And what might this one be? Spotted in a bird shop in LA...

Coturnix something. Jap quail to you and me. Eggs are tasty when boiled, but take a lot to make a cake. These are the ones that people eat and consider a big deal as dinners go. They come in a range of colours and this is obviously a marked white. Unless you mean it is the same size as a King? In which case the same answer re colour, but a lot rarer, as it would be a King mutation. And I would want to know why you did not bring it home with you.

in LA it could be any sort of king mutation, but I agree with FB it looks like a jap quail. (coturnix japonica by the way )
