My zebs are animals with nesting material . I just open the bag and chuck it in .

I dont pull it apart , I let them do the work , gives them something to do .

I have seen it presented in mesh bags like the one your oranges come in which is a neater way to do it .

Oh and never ever give feathers to birds on a windy day  My back yard looked like a white duck exploded in it the last time. :D

Grasses for nesting and the like I hang with bulldog clips.....White feathers I use clean dry 2ltr cordial bottle with a hole cut in near base (tape a perch in front) so birds can pull feathers one or two at a time

I use wire curled up to make a basket to hold nesting grasses, for feathers I use old onion or orangs bags stuffed with white feathers and semi stiched back up, they just pull the feathers through the bag. old hanging baskets, peg baskets ,freezer baskets will do the trick , far healthier than chucking it on floor...pete

OOOps maybe should have mentioned I have a suspended aviary for my zebs so it isn't actually chucked on the floor but rather on clean wire .

With grass etc.throw it on the floor and let them sort out what they actually want.
Cotton wool, press it between bird wire so they can only collect a little at a time and hang it near a perch
