Kings are alot smaller and unobtrusive. So they would be much better in a 1.6m2 aviary.

kings are a lot quieter than jap, the males let out a hell of a noise day and night....pete

I think kings are cuter, and better for a smaller aviary.

Have to agree with Pete, Don't think i could live with the noise levels of the Japs.

I'll disagree and say Japs, nothing like a ready supply of quail egg (I even use them to make up my egg and biscuit) and the only noise is the male and they aren't THAT bad, if your worried about the noise just get females they will still lay everyday for most of the year

I find the Japs nice and friendly too, mine all come running and follow me around the avairy (and sometimes even out the door)

I got four Japs with a view to the table, and put them in the big aviary where they wreaked havoc (just the size of them made them a bit destructive).
Then we put them in our (old) chookyard, with high fences but no roof.
They looked very happy the next day, but then we saw a big, almost black, subadult Wedgie lurking about the yard.
He has never tooken a chooken, but for four days, without fail, he took a quail.
Four classy lunches for the eagle, and I was Japless.
Worst of all, I didn't get to taste any......
I'd like to get some more Japs in due course, but wouldn't put them in the mixed collection of small seadeaters again.
I think of them as being a bit more like poultry than like an aviary bird.
Anyhoo, just my two bob's worth to add to the mix.

Nothing beats a newborn king quail! They come out fully formed and ready to party, cute as cute can be.

I would say that the King Quail would be the better option due to size and quiet behaviour. I currently have 2 pair (1 pair per avairy) and they get along quite well with my finches and diamond doves.
My silver pair currently have a tribe of 7 youngsters (7 eggs / 7 healthy babies, previous nesting 13 eggs / 13 healthy babies). Great parents.
Recently a pair of diamond dove babies left the nest and ended up camping out with the female quail while she was incubating!!!!
My cinnamon pair have had no eggs to date (or no nest for that matter) but were only a young pair this year when I got them.
It has been suggested to me that maybe I should have 2 females per male.
