Well we will give our Canaries one more go at breeding.
We put them back into the cabinet last week after a week in the avairy.
They have built the nest an have layed 2 eggs so far.
Using a cane nest at the back of cabinet.
Good seed and water,daily egg biscuit,and seeding grass ect
We are not looking in the cabinet too much..

Keep us all informed of the progress, and in 2 weeks we expect to hear that chicks have hatched.


The only other thing I would add is if this heat keeps up, it has been 37 and 38 the last 2 days in western sydney, then give the birds an opportunity to have a bath, and the hen will then sit back on the eggs whilst she is wet. This will help with the chicks hatching, otherwise you may experience "dead in shell" where the chicks are fully formed in the egg and don't break out of the egg.

She is sitting on 4 eggs now.

Agree completely with Canary. We are just having our 2nd day of real Summer weather. High 20's by 7AM and am concerned about hen getting too hot while sitting or dead in shell due to eggs getting dried out faster than the chicks can chip out. Constant supply of cool water that can be drunk as well as same for bathing will be provided along with minimal disturbance.

Yes we had a few very hot days here last week,early 30s.I did notice that the hen had a wet head sometimes while she was sitting in the nest,after she had a bath.Sometimes i will mist the canaries with water they love that,on hot days.
Anyway its cold and very wet here today so dont have to worry about the heat.
Covered the cabinets up early tonight very cold and windy.
I only check the canaries in the morning and in the afternoon to top up water and feed,trying to give them as much privacy as i can this time

Good luck. My hens are completely ignoring my concerns and one proven hen is nesting in a tin nest about 20cm from the roof (crackers bird) and a last years chick has built her own nest against the wire at the junction of a couple of perches on the south side.

That happens sometimes and I can't explain why some pairs that have had a full nets of fertile eggs previously, haven't mated or all the eggs aren't fertile in the next nest.

Out of 6 hens this time round I had 2 hens with 1 fertile egg. Luckily I had set all 6 hens on the same day so I was able to put their fertile eggs in with other hens that had 3 fertile eggs.

I now have 2 hens that I have given a 1 week break and put the cock back in with. This morning I saw one hen that hadn't made a nest yet, but was laying an egg standing on the perch, so I put her old nest back in, and she did lay in the nest. The other hen is just playing around with the nesting material at the moment.

All good fun, and I wouldn't miss it for anything else.

Just a update on the canaries,i ended up with 2 babies one of them is a bit smaller because it hatched 2 days after the other baby.
For some reason a lot of nesting material from the nest is gone.
Not sure if the babies are being feed that well.
