What are your ideas for a National Finch Breeders Directory?

Having kept pure bred Poultry in the past and having access to breeders through a printed directory made it very easy to track down what you wanted, I can't say the same for Finches can be very difficult to track down breeders and birds your after.

Think it would be a great benefit to all of us and in particular better establishment of rare breeds in our Aviaries.

It would be a great idea however I dont think breeders of the rarer birds want or need to advertise for security reasons ...Id like to see it happen but can understand those who dont .

They wouldn't have to give an address only state and suburb and mobile tel number, they can then choose to meet away from their property for the sale.

I wouldn't be in it probably. I generally meet unknown people in the garage with birds already caught. Some of the people I've freighted from I have never got their address, just a name and a mobile number and suburb / general area. My collection's not worth much to others I guess but it's megadollars to us.

Word of mouth can be frustrating but has it's place - when we were looking for the pearl longtails many of the people I was referred to no longer keep them so any printed list would be pretty useless pretty quickly too.

Or info kept by clubs of who is keeping the rare more difficult to get birds.

I really feel that it's at detriment to us all if we are unable to track down breeders of rarer birds "sure most give up after trying to find them without success".

If only a few are keeping them and are being closed lipped this could most certainly spell disaster if there is a poor breeding season etc.

All these things take a lot of effort to keep up to date. They start well but soon interest fades.

If it is going to be based on "rarer breeds" then I would think that is going to be a small group. Those with the ability to buy would be even rarer.

I would suggest advertising of "rarer breeds" would like advertising Rolls Royce cars. Nice for a look but then we turn to the more practical (financially) advertisements of Toyotas, Holdens and Fords, etc . After reading the adverts, and reviews, we end up buying what the local dealer or seller has available at a price that meets our needs and bank account.

I have only been active here for a short time but I think what i observe of adverts in the classifieds or comment in the appropriate posts seems to "do the deal". This stops phone calls and emails 12 months of the year when any excess may be sold within a few hours or days.

I am sure Mark some one within the finch club may know who has what , but its still probably only if I know you kind of stuff. Dont blame them , I dont normally trust people who come here, havnt sold any birds my self from home yet till we have a holding cage up the top closer to the house...pete
