Excellent job- you've done so well with them, very impressed! They're looking very healthy, and it's been great to follow your progress

Wrapped today. The older one caught it's first insect by itself today (mozzie flying past.)
I also gave it a flapping moth and it showed signs of knowing how to kill it.
What a relief - their instinct is kicking in and releasing them just got a whole lot less stressful.
The eldest can only fly short distances of about 30cm atm. They are more at a branch hopper stage.
The little one is still desperately trying to keep up.

The problem with release will be that they might be malimprinted or humanised and fly down to the nearest person that they see. A soft release in your own yard might be the way to go and you can leave food out for them (not hand feed them) to try to dehumanise them.

Definitely trying for a soft release. Just rearranged my big aviary so the 2 eldest can go out there during the day soon with some live food and less regular handfeeding.
They are already showing signs of being very upwardly mobile thinking i.e liking to be at the highest point of everything - can easily see them getting to the top of a tree and staying there. Just want to make sure they have some decent get out of trouble flying skills before they get that far.
Good sign is they recognise the warning calls of other birds and know to watch out for crows, falcons, etc
We have a seriously efficient goshawk that hunts sparrows here everyday that is my main worry.
A large family of Boobooks patrol at night.

Just wish it would warm up here at night - got a total of 5 mossies and 2 moths in last night light trap. :sob:

Weights 32g,30g& 24g

We live on a farm to so that helps with less human interaction.

First day in the outdoor aviary practising their kill skills on a leaf. Oldest can fly about 2 meters now, but both very clumsy.

Little one still desperate to be with the big ones, wouldn't stay in the nest so it was safer to let it hop around the floor.

You are going to have some fun pics with those three flying around.
