Picked this one on the way home tonight , noticed some was greener and some was browner but 10pm on country road I wasnt being fussy .

That's ripe Phalaris, aka canary grass.
They'll take it, but it's essentially dry canary seed on a stick (seed kebab?) and doesn't have the nutritional advantages of green seed.

Ok thanks . No green seed to be found at the moment so it will have to do them . Least it gives them something to do .

It's just that the first Phalaris is finishing. It keeps producing some green heads through the summer, but comes on strong again in autumn.
Around here the helicopter grass, kangaroo grass and flatweed are coming on, the rye and oats are finishing and the chickweed is long gone.
You can sometimes find late or early seeds in sheltered or damp spots, or against buildings or watertanks.

The helicopter grass is a favourite with my birds for food and for nesting material; it has a head like a flat six pointed star, with the arms of the stars lined with small seeds.

Very true , we found pockets of the wild oats growing in shady spots well after the oats growing in full sun had gone brown .

There was a fair bit of the Phalaris which was still green so Ill try to pick that first .
