building nests over nests

Noticed that my ruddies have built a nest over the top of their original nest.Covered up the eggs and all.Is this something they do when the eggs are infertile.
Also how long will finches sit beyond the incubation period if the eggs are infertile? :?:

I've had ruddies and a few other types of finches rebuild over the top if and existing nest, some with infertile eggs and other with fertile and some with young so I do believe that they will build over the old nest due to they like the location. Finches will abandon nests when there has been a disturbance to it by either rodents, aviery mates or you. I found that some finches will sit longer on infertile eggs around about a week in my situation and usually find that young pairs to do this more frequently.
