Novice owner here so sorry if this has been asked before.

I feed my gouldians finch seed in one tray and canary seed in the other. Is there any reason why I can't mix them together 50/50 split and put the mix in one food tray?

No reason why you can't. The feeding of separate mixes or even individual seeds allows you to monitor what is being consumed.
