My recent purchase. A friend at my request, brought from the Czech Republic. Very pleased, I am most struck by their size, much like Diamond Firetail.

I will try to reproduce them, they say they are very capricious and often there are bad parents.

Pretty looking bird.

Like the look of them. Are they hard to sex?

I presume the pearl modifies the colour rather than is a colour (as it does in other species) which means the pearl can be had in a variety of colours? Nice bird BTW, I'm not normally into Societies but the pearl works well.

I believe that Natamambo is right and the Pearl is a modification of a colour. That looks like a Chocolate or Chestnut Pearl to me. The Pearl originated in Japan and is now also found in Europe and the US since its first export to the Netherlands in 1999. As with the Euro Self, we in Australia do not have access to a mutation like this due to our importation laws and since there is not as much interest in the Bengalese (let alone the Selfs) in Australia, no mutation like this has ever been developed.

The large size is likely to be because it has come from Show bird stock and the size has been developed in these birds through selective breeding. I have some Pied Bengo Show birds from a breeder in Sydney and I am sure that they would easily rival the size of a Diamond Firetail. Because of their size the larger Bengalese beaks are difficult to sex by using the lower mandible method, the old faithful way of looking if a cock sings is best.

As with the Euro Self, standard Bengalese are often used as foster parents for these finches but that's not to say you will have bad luck in breeding it.
