Hi there,
Years ago I used to keep budgies on the coast, now I'm interested in keeping finch's and I'm about to build an aviary.

Any input for other member's would be appreciated  . Especially since it is much colder here.

Also looking for local people who keep finch's in Toowoomba and surrounding towns :) .

Thanks Martin

Hi Martin,

Welcome to the forum :D I'm no expert, and if I give you the wrong advice I'm sure someone will repost and point you in the right direction

With that said, it really depends on a number of factors and the first thing I would suggest is to troll through the forum for the answers your seeking.
Toowoomba is a cold place in winter time. So this is a major factor to consider but should not be a deterrent. Finches are breed in cold climates all
around the world, when they are given the right conditions.

So if I could suggest some things to consider. How much time do you have? some finches need more of your time then others eg: Birds that require seed
and live food will consume more time then seed eaters alone.

What type of aviary are you going to build, how big will it be? Some finches need a lot of room then others like the Diamond Firetail, my favourite finch
but just don't have the room to keep him, for now :(

Which way will your aviary sit? You will want full sunlight especially in the mornings if you can..... However there are thousands of aviary around the world
facing the wrong way that have very successful breeding programs in them.

Flooring? wow this one has a lot of debate. Which took me along time to decide on. The main decision is earth or concrete, then what to put or-not to put
on your floor. This topic also has a lot to do with what finches you keep, some finches like the Painted Firetail finch spend a considerable amount of time
on the ground, which can lead to a number of problems if not well drained damp floor.

Martin, I hope this gives you some insight, to ponder over, to investigate further. Keeping finches is a fantastic hobby and for some it's much more then that.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum

Looks to be all there steve23 Also you can plant your aviary with grasses if you want to give cover.I would suggest starting off with some bengalese or zebra finvhes as very hardy and easy look after finches to start with then can progress to gouldians, stars, ruddies etc.
