Cordon attack

Hi

Put my new cordon cock in yesterday and found today he is in the floor with half is face all bloody
Likely attackers cubans or ruddies


Any ideas on what to do

I would look at which pair is nesting at present, in particular which one has newly hatched young. These are likely to be more aggressive.

Most people will tell you that it is much more likely that the cubans are the culprits rather than the ruddies.

The solution would be to avoid introducing new birds into this aviary until after the current breeding cycle has finished. Then I would remove the cuban pair, re introduce the cock cordon and give him some time to settle in- even a few weeks would be good. Then introduce the hen cuban, watch the reaction and if all goes ok then introduce the cock a few days later. Watch them closely at this stage.
If you can reorganise the aviary furnishings before reintroducing the cubans then they are less likely to become aggressive again as quickly- it's like they are in a "new" aviary, rather than their old territory.

the cordon/ cuban saying "cubans will line their nest with pretty blue feathers" doesn't really apply to my avairy as "cordons will line their nest with pretty yellow feathers"

as my aviary sive is 4.3x1.5x1.7h

One of my aviaries is 12x3x2 metres, I still wouldn't put cubans in with my cordons...
Just because the aviary is a bit bigger doesn't mean the birds can't be aggressive.

I will put money on the cuban, NO matter how big the aviary is the bugger can turn nasty on anything blue. Mine would attack gouldians as they have blue on the back of the head. even white fronted blue scarlets.....Any thing that will turn on its own young 3 weeks after leaving the nest cant be trusted. I love them to bits but would never put them in a situation to show off thier fighting skills.... Pete

I too, as a young lad, discovered the Cuban's animosity toward the Cordon. It is not a mistake I would want to make again.
