I check eggs after a week or so and remove one or two to see if they are fertile. I check young as well after a week or so, and then again every few days when they start to get feathers. I think the birds get used to it and in my case ive saved a few young by checking. If a young one dies , here black ants can invade the nest and kill the others, a rotting corpse in the nest is not the best scenario either. Given zebs prolific breeding habits im not sure i would check and you have to careful in the latter stages as young can exit the nest prematurely. Each to their own i guess,i just havent found many finches to be as intolerant as other members suggest, then agian i dont have experience with as many species.

Do you think this was due to nest checks unsettling them? or maybe they are starting to get used to you this time....Finch_Breeder wrote:This pair is now back on eggs and are sitting after 2 attempts. Fingers crossed![]()

Probably due to them being first timers, nest checks + my brothers always used to play soccer outside of the aviary on the lawn, now they are sitting more and are quite used to me.
