Hi Andy, good to have you on board. I always marvel at the amount of Chaff Finches you have flying around wild across the "ditch" when we are over there. Got some really good shots of Gold Finches too

Henry yep i did go up to the fielding bird show this year but there didnt seem to be much variety there this year, although i did pick up a pair of cordons from a very good breeder in Fielding.
Henry can your Auckland birds cope with -3 degree frosts? i do keep my birds in a fully covered aviary this time of year but it still gets that cold early in the morning sometimes.

Hi Andy,
we had -3 last night at home, and my finchies do alright in it; they have plenty of shelter, but live in an outside aviary with substantial open areas. If they are in good general health and have a place to keep out of the wind most finches will tolerate below zero temps.

I sometimes smash the ice with a hammer in the mornings when I feed early, and I've seen canaries bathing in it before the ice has melted.

I reckon the cold is good for keeping the parasite load down; most worms etc.. don't like being frozen.
