Hey guys...I am wondering why the Tri Coloured and Sea green parrot finches are under the Foreign finch category, but the Blue Faced Parrot finch is under the Australian finch category. Am i missing something here-are they not all foreign or is the Blue faced a totally different species to the Tri coloured and Sea green?
Also will they hybrydise if i put blue faced in with sea greens?

Hi goldyelf,
Another late night post I see. Hopefully you're asleep now (6am).
Sea green is a mutation of the red face. There are native blue face parrot finches way up north but I doubt these are the race we all have in our aviaries, nevertheless they're generally considered to be Aussie natives. Tri-colour, Blue face and red face parrot finches are all different species and will hybridize so best kept apart.
Regards,
Sam

your comments got me thinking!
I did not think the BFPF originated on the Australian mainland. So I googled its distribution and was rewarded with the following link:

have your sound turned on when you go to the link. Outstanding stuff.

There are numerous subspecies of the blue-faced parrot-finch. The subspecies found in Australia occurs in isolated locations north of Cairns up to Cooktown and Iron Range. RFPF are from New Caledonia. Tri-coloured are from TImor.
