Hey guys,

Just thought I would put the question out there..

Has anyone had solar panels installed on their roof??
Are you finding it's helped with the power bills enough, as I can only imagine it would.. Even with the initial outlay of funds..

Who did you go through and how many kW did you have put up??

:)

Hi Vanetta,

I've only gone as far as to thinking of installing a solar panel on my aviary roof, to power a night or Vitamin D light. My thoughts were that the light would slowly die down in the evening, when the power runs low...

I guess you're obvioulsy talking about solar panels for your home, but hey, i've thought about it, but on a much smaller scale. One would need to work out the cost benefit and depreication versus the up front cost & when the break even point would be....therefore would it be viable option. You would also have to remember that it is a large capital outlay & alas, one may not be able to buy that bird (when it come available) that you always wanted...

Cheers

I've vaguely looked in to it, ideal for high power users in areas with good sun hours and good light access for sun on to panels (not so good if roof has shade on it much of day even if you live in a sunny climate). We have panels on the van roof and even just a few hours a day of sun is ok but camp under trees for a few days and batteries start to struggle to keep charge.

Apparently if you have a pool or spa and good sun "access" it's worth the effort. We have a retirement village near us which got a bulk deal, whole vilage was done. Friends in it say their community centre is now basically free of power costs (kitchen, library, pool and communal rooms under one roof) nd most residents have noticed a drop in power bills but of course the bulk deal may have influenced the overal price discount for the power.

Hi, we had a 1.5KW system put in when the full rebate was around, there are just the two of us but since the system was put in
we have a credit to our account each statement. The systems are cheaper now but the credits are also less so hard for me to comment on the
current situation.Go back over your past statements, work out how many units you use a day and then find out what the different size systems supply.

Cheers Greg.

The grey nomads AKA my parents got there first bill recently since installing solar ...we are talking about people who LOVE their hot water ..Total amount of bill $10.00 and that was with a dismal summer in Hervey Bay where it rained most of the Summer .
In laws also in Hervey Bay got a bill of $0 that's right nil .

Hi Venetta

We put a 3 kw unit on our roof under the first NSW scheme Of $0.60 per kw feed in tariff , Our average daily use is 26 kw our average daily power production was 11.99 kw via sola slightly down due to overcast days . We just recently shopped around and changed power supplier and got an additional $0.08 per kw So we now receive a credit for $0.68 per kw we produce . on our last power bill we received a credit for $84 that covers meter reading and other charges . Under the new NSW scheme of I think about $0.10 kw feed in tariff the pay back would be to long and the saving not as much . Under the current scheme we probably would not have gone ahead with the system .

example

NSW sola bonus & AGL rebate 1091 kw @ $0.68 = $741.88 cr (old scheme )

new NSW sola bonus 1091 kw @ $ 0.10 = $109.10 cr ( new scheme ) not worth it do the sums .
