So while we were out painting the new aviary, heard something land on the other aviary roof and the birds start going ape...

Looked over to see this guy!!!

Brown goshawk???
First we've ever seen a raptor like this around... We usually just see the red tailed blacks, crows, magpies, lorikeets and kookaburras!

He actually landed on the laserlite stuff on the roof of the aviary!!

Kylie is a bit freaked out, as we've got the young gouldians in the aviary who can be a bit dumb!!!

I dont want to scare you , but he or it will be back....now they know where a easy feed is, best to be vigilant....all these aviaries your building is a big sign saying welcome raptor cafe... the birds should go quiet when they are around.... pete

Yeah I figured. I know a few doors down also has birds... I think budgies/cockatiels and chickens... Maybe he will want a bigger snack than whats in our yard...

I used to have some kind of raptor land on our pergola roof (the budgie aviary was underneath this) and I can honestly say that every time he would thump down on the roof I would near fall of my chair.

There was the odd occasion where he made no noise but perched on the fence next to the aviary. It was one of those moments where you felt like someone was staring at you and sure enough no more than 2 meters away from my head there he was!

He never managed to get the birds but he did startle them all quite a bit.

The worst predator was the owl who decided to swoop me one night. I think it confused my mobile phone with something tasty. All I remember is hearing a whooshing sound them me plus owl were on the deck.

OMG Do not underestimate these predators! I have caught three in the last week in a cat trap and relocated them. They turn up, terrorise the birds (especially parrots and pigeons) who fly full speed into the sides of the aviary and damage their faces or scalp themselves on the roof. They cannot get them but the birds don't know that. The other disadvantage is the waste of food (fruit and veg and softfood) as nothing is eaten when the hawk is lurking. Birds will also abandon nests if the hawk is persistent for a couple of days. As beautiful and majestic as they are get rid of it . Unlike some of the other species of hawks Brown Goshawks will not move on by themselves, they will stay for weeks. :thumbdown:

We haven't seen him again... yet...

But then we can't be home all the time to check!!! :/

The dogs usually like to chase any birds that fly into and around the yard, so fingers crossed they might keep it at bay too..
