Hey all, Just interested to know anything about Java Sparrows..as i like the look of them and would like some...are they peaceful birds and would they fit well in with finches? I have read their diet is more like a budgie mix-is this correct? I guess my concern would be putting them in with finches as i dont know anything about their temperaments at all.
Also how difficult is it to get the lighter coloured ones-i think they are called fawns>? thanks

I used to have Javas with finches....had no problems...but....it was a very large avairy..2 feed stations...I did have another pair in with finches in a smaller aviary also no probs...except for territory over how close others got to their nest...but it was never serious....I think it also depends on the personality of the bird too....all mine were pretty placid

Always found Javas docile, haven't kept them for yonks but always immaculate and great beginners birds

Note to self: Must get a couple for the grandkids, who have mastered the art of breeding zebbies (in grandad's aviary, with grandad doing all the chores etc)

Pets are great for kids . . they teach responsibility

Isabella,
With what you have told us about the size of the aviary, and some of the birds you already have (Cordons etc) I would not recommend putting Javas in with them. I understand you have read that they are peacefull but I wouldnt agree in close quarters. An adult Java is probably 3 or 4 times the body weight of a cordon and they will use this advantage at the feeding station and for choice of roosting locations.

Javas are nice bird and relatively easy to breed. When I had them I liked to pair them off in threes and let the cock and hen pick their partner. I have heard couple of horror stories about javas and zebs. I have seen them mixed nicely in avieries.

Hmmm interesting-i will take caution and not do anything until i build my big aviaries which i cannot yet because i am in the midst of getting my house built, but then after that i have 7 acres to play with. So perhaps i could put them in with other birds in a mixed aviary-just not the tiny ones??? Or maybe with neophema's and some doves and maybe gouldians-would anyone agree with that-i have my eye on some par-blu scarlets or torquoise parrots-they mite suit-would anyone else agree-can anyone make suggestions for a what to put with javas-actually should i start a new topic on that?? i mite wait to see what the response is here before i do that.... thanks for your help guys.

Isabella when I had javas many years ago I had them with bourkes, canaries and some chestnuts. They were fine with them. I think zebs might be an issue with their nature and the power of a java can be of a worry.

Mine are with Gouldians, Canaries and Zebs in the breeding avairys. Gouldians in the majority, single pairs of the others. 1st nest pick to the Javas. Also with Canarys and Zebs in non breeding avairys in quantity, no problems.
