Rusty Cage

I am trying to educate my Mother (she wants a canary) and won't listen to me but will happily read info I give her. I have found some great info to print but nothing on cage rust and if its ok or not ok to put finches or canaries in a rusty cage.
She is nearly 80 so her info is very out of date (she actually thought canaries and finches only live for 3 years until I gave her info to the contrary).
Does anyone know of any info I can print out to give her that says rusty cages are dangerous for finches and canaries?
Or if you post it here I can show her.

Haven't tried it myself but I imagine hat eating flakes of rust would be very harmful, and it's also probably sharp when they land on the bars.

It can break easy.The sliding doors can jam on the when going up and down.If they eat it may block there intestines up and may poison

Depending on how rusty. Lightly sand, then paint black. Black allows for the best viewing. But do please do this before buying any birds. And don;t disparage the older biros. My Mum is 80 and has forgotten more about bird keeping than many of us will ever know, and still keeps and copes with multiple avairys and types of birds. Being a birdo keeps us young.

I believe that it would depend how badly rusted the cage is. I have seen birds kept in cages that I wouldn't even think of using they were that rusty. I would also be worried that the bird might get out.

If it is only light surface rust then I have brushed them with a wire brush, sprayed the cage with a rustguard and then sprayed black. They look as good as new.

Some of my training cages are starting to show some rust and will be getting that treatment in July after the show season is over.
