my holy grail is to help keep what limited foreign species we have in our aviaries now going in pure forms, wont be long and some of what we used to call common will be the next holy grail for us all eg a pure normal Java Sparrow. Wasnt that long ago that some of the finches listed in the below posts were in backyard aviaries. I had occasion to buy a collection of a finch clubs news letter not so long ago, I picked a few random years 1989-2001 and looked at what was being traded - aberdeens, cardinals, red shoulder whydah, dubowski twinspot just to name a few. For some of the young members these birds have virtually or actually disappered from our gene pool in just over 20 years, now while that may seem like a long time for the young forum members, forthe more mature generation it seems just like yesterday.
Unless laws change on imports (an knowing the way the biosecurity boffins think) we wont get any top ups in the next 20 years at least if at all.
Start thinking about what finches you have that you dont want to be on the holy grail list and keep breeding them before its too late.
