Hello everyone ,

Moxidectin comes in several strengths and I'm wanting to know what strength is best for birds? I have seen strength of 1mg/ml Moxidectin and the 18.8 mg/mL Praziquantel that's for Moxidectin Plus which does internal and external parasites the plus is for the Praziquantel which is for tape worm also.

The Australia Pigeon Company sell the strength of 2mg/mL Moxidectin and 18.8 mg/mL Praziquantel . what I want to know is would the 1 ml Moxi be or the 2 ml be more effective to clear all parasites and worms ?

The 2mg strength is more effective.
Both products contain the same praziquantel concentration, but the APC product contains twice the moxidectin.

Before anyone asks, no you can't just double the volume of the 1mg moxidectin product because you will also double the praziquantel dose to potentially toxic levels.

Sooooo...

If we bought the 1mg batch via AFF, do we

1) make each dosage period longer?
2) dose more frequently?
3) both?

I'm not even sure what strength my current bottle is - I won it in a club raffle. No label at all but it's called Cydectin+ (rather than Moxidectin+) if that helps to identify the strength.

Moxidectin Plus and Cydectin Plus are the same thing they are use for sheep, cattle and Pig wormer and parasites . There are different Streath from 1, 2, 5 mg you must use the one that you can dilute into water....Dr Colin Walker (Bird Vet) uses the Active constituent: 2mg/ml and Praziquantel 18.8mg/ml direction 5ml to 1 liter of water .

I know the forum can get the 1mg Streath ..is it possible to get the 2mg Streath from the forum? Does anyone know if it is possible ?

Sam,
That is exactly why the authorities become nervous about repackaging medications.
The club should get their act together & relabel the bottles properly, including the active ingredients and their strength.
If it is Cydectin Plus, then it will contain moxidectin at 1 mg/ml.

Natamambo,
I would use it as directed. The 1 mg/ml strength will be effective in most applications. The reason that the APC formula has double the moxidectin concentration is that pigeons often suffer from Capillaria worms, which can be very resistant to medications. Capillaria are less common in finches, but I have seen it in cardinals.

After checking in the fridge I find I have half a bottle of Colin Walker's 2g/L Moxidectin (ie. no prazee). I'm thinking when I next worm I'll use 5ml of the 1g/L Cydectin+ and 2.5ml of the 2g/L Moxidectin per litre of water which should work out to be the same as using the 2g/L Moxidectin+ per litre of water.
