A recent study confirms what we knew - mynas are associated with a decrease in certain native bird species but surprisingly there are some that appear to benefit too. For more details see todays Melbourne AGE newspaper.

I think most people realise how much the Indian Myna has spread.Infact I have just returned from far far north Qld and was
amazed as how common they are up there.
Secondly I can't see how those 3 species have gained from the Mynas presence as they all are hollow nesters as well.
Maybe driving out the bigger Cockatoos,it would be better to spend money on getting rid of them rather than spending money on
telling us they are a pest.

CIMAG (canberra indian mynah action group) has done a fantastic job, and now they are a rare sight in Canberra.
I trapped a few myself, and the traps are certainly excellent.
Travel up to 5 KM out of canberra though, and there they are again....

The local CMA advertised for a 3 day per week Indian Mynah control person a couple of years ago as they had funding to designate toward doing something about them & at that time they were just starting to emerge in a handful of localities in this region & were well established in others so there was a chance to make some inroads with co-ordinated trapping/control. All I have seen or heard of the person who filled the position is a public awareness role with no hands-on control or co-ordination activity at all. All enquiries I've made toward doing something in my area leads to "pay us $400 & I'll send you a trap".

They really are beautiful birds; just a shame about their effects on the hollow nesting nativesDanny wrote: I just want a a pair to fiddle with in the aviary out of softbill desperation.

They have great personalities and can mimic sounds etc.
