We've had a few threads about these useless eBay rings and despite the warnings I continued to use them as temporary identifiers on larger finches in my holding aviary. I'd been using them on young Diamonds and Masks so I could watch and try to spot cocks and hens and also a few on Gouldians. About 2 months ago I had a young mask almost lose a leg after one of these stupid rings got stuck over its knuckle so you'd think I would have learnt my lesson - stupidly I thought Gouldians and Diamonds would be ok given their larger legs.

This morning a young Diamond was holding its leg up and sure enough the eBay ring was stuck over its knuckle. The foot is rather swollen but I think I may have caught it in time. The ring had opened up to slide over the knuckle. So it was not the diameter of the ring at fault but that there was insufficent tension to keep the stupid thing closed. This suggests these rings are not suitable for any birds regardless of their leg size.

I have just thrown all my remaining eBay rings in the bin and I'll be removing them from all of my birds over the next few days.

Thanks for the warning Sam.

Hopefully your Diamond's leg will be ok.

I purchased two pair of Cutthroat Finches today from the Wagga bird sale, two bird had those cheap over sized rings on.
Luckily they were easily removed and replaced with the better quality thinner Hughes rings.
The rings taken off were rubbish and the thick walls made them cumbersome and I would presume easily caught up in the twigs of the the brush.
Please buy good quality thin walled Hughes rings.Personally I would love to not have to use ID rings but our system just wouldn't be manageable without them.

What brand are we talking about - asian ones, Lentradirect ones or another. Places like Lentra allow you to choose the size appropriate for the birds you are using it on so there's no one size fits all ring.

My post was a bit to general - of course there are numerous eBay sellers who are no doubt selling quality rings (Lentra is probably one of them).
I don't think there is a specific brand as I believe they are in fact beads (someone on here determned this some time ago). No doubt they originate from China.
Here's a picture which shows how thick they are. Often they are shown on sticks which makes it difficult to see how thick they are.

I use the Lentra split coloured alumiinium ones which I saw on eBay but visited their shop to buy. I use them for canaries and zebras. Has anyone had any problems with these?

Yep my poor little Emblema girls ring went down over the foot and got stuck .
Was 2 days earlier that I last saw her fit and well so in 2 days her foot has been permanently disfigured , touch wood she regained enough movement to be able to roost somewhat normally .
