i use to do the same thing as you mike , put as many birds in a aviary as i can :0
but for the best results i find single pairs go better ,
for example i have a 4.8m(Long) 2m (high) 2.5 (wide) aviary which is heavliy planted .
it currently houses'
1 pair of yellow painted firetails
1 pair of peid pink firetails
1 pair of red cheeked cordon bleus

all birds breed great all have same diet needs and all have same nesting needs.
.
and thand same when feeding your birds , dont cheap out and not put the good stuff into them ,
you only get out what you put in !!!!
I feed these guys sprouting mix. frozen white ants, greens, tonic mix , taste of africa , and premium finch mix
and the example of you " you get out what you put in "
is what the birds are on now:
1 pair of yellow painted firetails : 4 babys in the nest
1 pair of peid pink firetails : working the nest , should lay soon
1 pair of red cheeked cordon bleus : 4 eggs all fertile due to hatch in 4 days

so just take your time , work out what birds you like and what ones you want to keep , make shore their safe to house together ,
and feed them up well , dont over crowed the aviary .
and you will be having alot more birds on the perch at the end of the season :

Sorry for the life story :lolno: :lolno: :lolno: :lolno:

Yer I'll start with one pair of Painted fire-tails and a pair of ruddies in my new aviary (when it gets built) and supply lots'a live food.

Pretty much everything Mike - I personally don't like their appearance (and don't keep them) but we have them at work, and sweeter birds have yet to make themselves known.

Even cutthroats? Heard their aggressive, don't want to house them with anything that will disturb them while breeding.

Cut throats can be a little nosey- the main problem is finding things that won't annoy them. I know someone who has both and they're fine, but his is an aviary (roughly) 3m x 2m. Id say they would be fine, stars are sweet but capable of defending themselves.
