Sorry Craig but I can not agree with you. If the main body disappeared Geelong and maybe Mornington would just be a very active group
of maybe 100+ members and very vulnerable. Its not just bird clubs, an example 7 years ago there was a very strong group with assets worth
in excess of $65 million, then some smart people decided to break away from the main body and break it up between the branches.
The head body ended up with a building, a couple of million dollars, the name and some memories.Today the head body is once again active and actually
going well without any handouts. As for the breakway branches, one is a success because they could sell one of their aquired assets, but over half have closed down and the rest rely on Govt. hand outs. That is a fact.Little fish can't feel safe in a big pond.
We could argue this for hours.

It seems that the ASA are happy to have a little bird sale.
Their attitude suggests that the country ones are big enough and Melbourne can just plod along with its poor attempt at running a bird sale.

The problem is they are missing a huge opportunity here.

A Melbourne bird sale should not necessarily cater just for breeders.
It has the potential to represent aviculture to a whole capital city of general public. People who keep just a pet bird or who have a general interest in birds.

The Brisbane Bird Fair run by the Parrot Society does exactly this. They have bird displays, large trade stands & private breeders.

If the ASA committee don't see the value of this opportunity, then they can keep their heads buried in the sand and let the club die a slow death.

What a shame.

If members are annoyed by this, then nominate someone with some "go" in them for a committee position at the next AGM.

Those presently holding these positions are largely there by default.

I've been following this thread with interest and am not overly surprised by the result.
From my perspective, the ASA is hurtling into irrelevance and there seems to be no-one at the tiller that has the slightest notion of how to turn it around, nor any inclination to try.

Frankly, with the exception of the monthly meetings (which can be difficult to get to when you work 9-5 weekdays) there really isn't anything they offer that isn't done better by other providers.
The publications don't hold a candle to ABK, Just Finches, Talking Birds, etc.
The Buy/Sell/Swap pages of forums such as this are far simpler and more productive that going through the exchange steward.
Forums, facebook, etc. are all much better ways of networking.
And the branches are now offering far superior bird sales.

I'm honestly surprised they still attract the membership they do. :snide:

Update on Melbourne Bird Sale.

I have just spoken to one of the committee members about this.

He assures me that he will propose that the president makes a general request for a bird sale subcommittee be formed from those in the general membership who are interested.
This will happen at the next meeting (tonight/tomorrow night?).

Hopefully this proposal will be accepted and those of you who want to help the sale become one of the best bird sales in the country again can feel you have the backing of the committee to do so.

Any of you who attend the meeting should ask whether the proposal was accepted if it is not mentioned.

This way if they chicken out of the proposal the entire audience can know about it!!

Good luck guys!

In defence of the Committee.Should they be unable to form a subcommittee then no one should complain about where it is and how it is operated
From what Myzomela has informed us its good that the committee seems to be listening.Well done all.

Hi All,

Update from last night.

Well the Committee did not raise the issue of the Melbourne Bird Sale during the meeting. Disappointed at being treated like fools again the 4 of us (Tino, Flavio, Gary and myself) proceeded to leave. As we were leaving we started to express our thrustration to 1 particular Committee member. To his defence he was understanding of our concerns but stated he could not devulge what was said in the Committee meeting...fair enough. Then 3 other Committee members joing in on the convesation and our group of 4 had a fairly frank and at times heated discussion with the 4 Committee members.

Whilst its obvious to me that some of the Committee members have taken our criticism of the sale personally, some of them showed last night that they are willing to listen. They asked us to find an appropriate venue and they would investigage (this was outside the meeting).

So if you know of a venue that is at least twice the size of the La Trobe site please PM me and I will do the leg work....find out availability, costs, parking availability etc. If it seems to tick all the boxes I will provide this information to the Committee. I will continue to provide the Committee's response to our written information on this forum to allow all members to be aware of what is happening (or not).

Just in case anyone was wondering if the Committee is reading our posts about this topic.....based on the comments from 1 Committee member last night they are definately reading your posts. So if you want your voice heard either write your thoughts to the committe or post it on the AFF.

Cheers
Paul

PS: there was a fantastic presentation of a South African bird tour....many shots of weavers and waxbills....Jayburd would have loved it

Hi all i went to the AV society meeting last night and like paul said the committee did not raise the issue of the
Mel bird sale very disapoited but not surprised.
It is ovious that the committee does not think of its members or care about changing the location or venue of the bird sale,
Same committee members are willing to listen to us but only a few .
It was very disappoiting when one of the committee member started to point the finger at paul and tino and saying to them
there causing trouble and writing bad coments on the forum there is no need for it as a committee member he should know
better. They do not whant members to express there views or opinions
I have a feeling that if paul or others find a new venue the committee will say no.
and thats my opinion cheers flavio.
