What parrots housed with finches???

I thought it was a common knowledge, "no hookbills with finches!

Thats what I used to think. But then I learnt about some of the grass parakeets.

for most, that is correct - budgies, no. cockatiels, usually not. lovebirds, VERY no. but some hookbills (in a large enough aviary, of course) are fine, such as neophemas, bourkes, mulgas, hoodeds etc.

As Ive said before the dynamics of each aviary is different and varied .
The temperament of each bird is totally different and varied .

I have had mixed aviaries that Ive been told work work only to find birds killed and mamed , Ive also got ( now ) finches in with different parrots that are working out great .

My fav neophema would be the Scarlet , they are quiet ,not flighty , shy and not an annoying bird , they will chew but wont destroy a heavy planted aviary in a hurry and they are not aggressive towards other birds , even in breeding season the hen will juts sit in the nest and the boy will stay close to the nest except for feeding .

The thing to do is try it out and just be keeping an eye on them , put out a couple of feed stations , lots of hiding areas , nests as far apart as possible ...just common sense things really .

The little Bourkes would be second favourite , they are a bit more assertive than the Scarlets but not nasty , they are early risers and the last to go to bed and bring a aviary to life with their early morning songs .

Give it a go , see how you go . id be surprised if you had any problems . Oh just a tip ...I use a cylinder of wire as a base for nest building with the finches in mixed aviaries because ...they like to build their own nests ...the parrots cant chew it like they would /could with the cane nests and the finches will build back far enough from the entrance to discourage sticky beaks from getting to any young , this is not such a problem with the neophemas but I find it very handy with the Quarrion / finch aviary .

Oh FYI Mulgas and Hoodeds i would say no also .
My Mulgas are only new so cant say but I did catch my Hoodeds trying to pull Zebs out of their nests so ... NOPE .

Jay I don't mean to be rude but the dynamics of the birds in the aviaries where you work would be totally different to the average keepers aviaries ..Size matters lol.

You guys ought to see some of the larger bird parks like the Loro Parque, Vogelpark Avifauna, Weltvogelpark Walsrode etc, this has changed me and how I now breed birds and I am sure it will change your opinion how to breed birds. All of the Parrot species are bred "one pair per aviary" there are larger non breeding aviaries where young non breeding birds are kept but usually with similar size birds definitely no finches. If you really really wanna keep parrots then why not build them an aviary, finches do not mix well with hookbills and I have seen birds with missing toes, legs, young birds taken and eaten from a nest, I have seen Peach faces eating another bird while still alive on the perch. I would never ever do it, even for short period of time. I do not think the size of aviary makes any difference. Even finches at times cannot be kept with other finches, some birds (individuals) may not be but many are very territorial. You wouldn't breed cats and dogs in the same enclosure so why breed finches and parrots. Not a good practice, no matter what anyone says.

I have 4 aviaries with finches and 1 pair of Scarlets in each aviary with no problems what so ever.
Last week a pair of Emblemas took up residence in a hollow log and it was so funny to watch
a finch chase a cock Scarlet around the aviary when he came near the log.The hen Scarlet has
chosen another log. Last season I had Bourkes in one aviary but after rearing 1 clutch I sold
them, you have to be aware that they are night flyers, good way to spook roosting finches.

And I would never tell a birdkeeper that a finch cant live with a non aggressive parrot ...

It can and has been done ... it may be outside the box for some but to others it is perfectly normal .
