During our Kalbarri holiday, we were driven crazy by a bird of some kind, he would call at night, a repetitive, slightly out of tune whistled tune, that reminded both hubby and I of the trumpet tune of the "reveil" (sp.??) that the army plays at dawn to wake up the troops. Does anyone know what bird it could be? one night it drove everyone crazy!

Thanks for the link Mortisha. It does not sound like the Koel, it is more like someone whistling a tune, but out of tune instead of melodious. Hubby tried to record it but it didn't work out. Might do a google search of nocturnal birds around Kalbarri to see if i can narrow it down.

Willy wagtails usually have a funny chirping sound, I have never heard them whistle like that. This was a sound I have never heard before. It was like a person whistling a tune, over and over. I even wondered if it was someone's pet parrot but it was singing at night so must be nocturnal.

Let's try Chiming Wedgebill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmm6ZXQL6gA or maybe Pied Butcherbird (click on the orange button) http://www.listeningearth.com.au/blog/a ... an-outback if it sounds like like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGnZxcS7VKA I'm guessing Butcherbird or maybe Wedgebill.

Thanks Tintola for those links. The pitch and tone of the call is similar to the butcher bird but not as tuneful. And listening to your "reveille" link, I must have the wrong tune in mind, as it wasn't as upbeat at that but reminded both hubby and me of a military tune.
