Hello Everyone,
Another new forum member here - living in Newcastle NSW. It's been many years since I've kept finches, basically when I was a young boy. I now have some boys of my own and I'm in the process of setting up again to get myself back into it as well as spark their interest.
Unfortunately a number of the bird shops/dealers around town that I used to know have closed so I'm not really certain where I can get quality birds from. I'm not in a rush, and I have read about the upcoming sale at Singleton so I might make a trip up there to check it out.
I look forward to reading lots of the good info on here.
Benniee

Welcome Benniee,
There are a few of us here from the Newcastle area. The singleton sale should be good - you should also join the Hunter Valley Finch Club while you are at the sale.
The pet shop at Branxton would be my pick of the bird dealers in the area.
Cheers
Ian

Thanks for the replies.
I did a bit of a forum search last night and read about the shop at Branxton, as well as the Birds'R'Us shop at Cessnock. Both sound good so I might have to give them a call to see if they have much for sale at the moment.
I am interested to head up to Singleton as I mentioned, but I guess I'm concerned that there will only be the "top shelf" finches for sale up there rather than some of the bread and butter style that I am hoping to get started with.
I did contemplate getting a pair or two of Zebs for my son, that's what I started with. They still seem to be readily available in plenty of places, but I've read a little about them being a bit too full on with some other species if housed together.
If I could have my pick of what to get it would be a couple of pairs of normal Gouldians and a couple of pairs of red paced parrot finches. To my eye both of these are beautiful birds and from what I've read they tend to get along reasonably well.
Thanks again,
Benniee

G'day Benniee,Welcome to the forum and you will get all all grades of finches at the Singleton sale,it's best to get the owners point of few of birds you want than buy from a dealer and the birds will be cheaper too. Cheers Craig
