Star Finch eggs....

Hi guys and pals, I am a newbie to this forum and I would like some help if possible! Hello everybody first of all. I am a finch keeper and some weeks ago a pair of star finches started to lay eggs in their walk in aviary. I have two hen java sparrows too in this aviary and some other mixed collection of finches. When the star finch was about to lay her third egg, it became egg bound and sadly my intervention failed, the hen died. It happened that the two java sparrow hens had laid eggs in their nest and these are obviously infertile. So I decided to put the two star finch eggs in their nest and to my surprise one of these star finch eggs hatched today! My question is this, can the java sparrows raise this young??? Thanks a lot for all the info!

I would keep an eye on them stars are smaller Javas to see if they are feeding him.What other species are there in the aviary ?

Hi thanks for replying...I have other star finches, owl finches, cherry finches, bangalese or society finches, gouldians, black throats and heck finches...

Well I'm sure this is not an experiment that anyone would have deliberately carried out but you do the best you can with the resources available. Please let us know how it works out - I'm hoping for the best.

I would put them under societies if they were sitting on eggs.But Never know outcome till you try.

Hi again, I can t put them under society finches because my society finches have no eggs and no nest because I bought just a couple of days ago...I think there is nothing I can do except see how long will this star finch live before dying because I honestly won t expect a java sparrow to raise it! It would be the luckiest finch on earth!

I don't see why they couldn't, they eat basically the same things, and raise their chicks in the same way.
Apart from the size difference, they would be quite similar.

I don't think there would be a problem diet wise but their feeding manner is not the same.
Javas from memory feed more front on but Stars bend their heads nearly 90 deg and downwards to be fed.
There is nothing to lose though.If there was a nest in with the Bengalese they may feed the chick.
It doesn't matter what sex the Bengalese are they just have an ability to feed anything.Not always with success but
they will attempt the impossible at times.
