I picked this little one up from the middle of Hunter Street opposite the train station. It was stopping traffic :worry:

Unfortunately it's sibling wasn't so lucky. :(

What is it?
Crake, heron, egret or other?
More photos would help if you're not sure.

Is it a softbill?
Depends on your definition, I suppose.
Working on my usual definition (all birds that are not finches, parrots, pheasants,
quail or waterbirds), it is not.

I was being cryptic for those playing at home...

It's a white faced heron.

All good MM.

So would it be a softbill or a waterbird? It was a cute little Bugger who might have got to stay at my place if I had more room. :silent:

Waterbird, I reckon....
At least on my definition.
I'm sure one of the softie gurus will chime in soon enough.

Is a softbill not simply any bird that doesn't eat hard stuff? If so, yes it's a softbill coz it eats squishy stuff :parp:

I would class it as a softbill and so would NPWS if they are on the books, and I think they are.
