Time for an update!
The triple C arrived, and we've been using it daily.
Results so far: the birds are FAR more active than they were, and generally look much happier. No signs of pins yet, and the skin still looks a bit scaly, but I suspect the scaly skin will clear up with their last few doses of scaly face treatment, and the pins will take a few weeks, won't they?
Overall, a success so far! Thanks for everyone's help, and especially Sam for sending me the meds!!

Based on the photos I couldn't see evidence of scaly face. What scaly face treatment are you using?

I'll try and get some more pictures tomorrow. The skin is white and flaky on their heads and necks, which is why I suspect the mites.
I'm using the Aristopet scaly face and leg treatment, active constituents Benzyl Benzoate and liquid paraffin

Time for an update.
After treatment with Triple C, the longtails are looking much better!! The male is almost back to normal, the female has a bit more to go (but she was worse to start with). Here's some before and current pics

definatly looks like the scaly mites to me. before looking at the obvious(the face) have a good close look at their feet and toes, if they are looking scaly/scabby then its highly likely its scaly mites. where birds share perches or stand in pooped areas such the floor they pick up the mites on their feet, the infected bird will tred all over the perches and cage floor spreading the mites. they normally get on the face because all birds wipe their beaks on perches, share seed and peck around in the poop on the floor and sharing cuttlebone.
a nce little tip, it can be difficult to apply cream to such a small bird using your fingers so i use a small art brush which the birds dont seem to mind plus i can get into those small places without squashing the birds toes.

i really hope those little guys get better. after a week of treatment with scaly cream i'd treat them with ivermectine as a precaution this will treat them for internal mites as well as external mites.
