My nest boxes are cleaned, half stuffed and numbered ready to go in on Boxing day, do others also use Boxing day as nest box introduction day for the new season for Gouldians.

rip,i would find that a bit early, mid Febuary or even early March would be better as it could be too hot any earlier imo Craig

was just about to write something similar, i used to put them in at this time, but summer the last few years in vic has been pretty dam hot, mid feb works for me, it gives the birds a rest between molting and breeding ( il pair my birds up in jan load up on the breeding diet then when the nest boxes go in, they should be cherry ripe :)

That's what everyone said last year, so I waited. Jan was cold, Feb not much better and those who'd put boxes in earlier that I spoke to had better results  .

i belive each breeder each yr has to determine the right time to place nest boxes in the aviary, it should be decided with local climate conditions in mind and condition of the birds the breeder has.

I always waited till mid to late January, but now I only have a pair of gouldians in a few mixed aviaries so they make their own decisions (not breeding now though). However I was around at a mates place the other day and he had a number of clutches of gouldians just fledged - which I thought was very odd.

I have been reading these posts and started to think about my Gouldians.
Normally I put the boxes in just after Xmas.
While I am no where near what you would call an avid Gouldian deciple I do have 3 smaller aviaries for them.
Anyway this morning I thought I should have a look at them and at least get the boxes ready .
On checking the birds, there is NOT one hen bird with a beak even starting to blacken, which with my limited knowledge of
these birds I presume it could be possibly mid January before they are ready.
My boxes at least are ready to put the grass in as they have dried in the sun.
Prior to each season I make up a batch of Coopex and submerge the boxes in it for a very short time, then I put them in the Sun to dry.

I do mine in mid Feb each year. By the time 1st round young have hatched the worst of the unbearable hot days have usually passed. Still time for 3 rounds by early/mid July when boxes are taken out again.
