As the town I live in has many beaches, I can collect heaps of cuttlefish bones. My question is should I leave them whole, break them into small pieces or crush them into a powder?

Agree....but be careful how you store it! I once gathered a heap after a storm and placed them in a big bag. I think the sea creatures living on them died and the whole bag went sour.

I was using plain shell grit then found this stuff and the birds go mad for it. They're always sitting in the tray picking at it. I mixed 2kg plain grit to 1kg of the Avione grit. I also have a whole cuttlebone for them to pick at.

I also rinse cuttlebone when I get it from the beach. Just to wash away any yucky stuff (sorry to be so technical) away. I don't see salt (seasalt!) as a worry but any sliminess or remnants of he mollusc who owned it originally!!
