So far so good, I think they're kings of the aviary as the zebs were a little quiet tonight. They have well and truly settled in as they were patrolling the seed feeder and they have demolished a cuttlebone.

Gouldians go through more cuttlefish than any other finch I know of.

A bit of an update. The zebs are breeding like rabbits so I am removing them as soon as this hot weather subsides and I can get it the aviary to get them out. At last count I had 5 new zebs with another 2 appearing yesterday. Even though the aviary is crowded I have a Gouldian pair in the nesting box so maybe they're getting in on the zeb action also.

Today was finally cool enough for operation zeb extraction. Not having enough room in the aviary to swing a net I had to resort to grabbing them by hand. I managed to grab 8 and couldn't get the last 3. I decided to let them stay as I had stressed the gouldians enough. I removed the zeb nests and gave the aviary a pressure wash and general clean up. One pair of gouldians had previously made themselves at home in the main nesting box and I was glad to see them back in it about an hour after I had finished in the aviary. I think the gouldians are pleased to have some peace and quiet :D As for what I did with the 8 zebs, Nunawading birds took them off my hands and gave me some seed and supply of cuttlebones in return.

Sounds like you need to put seed dishes in a small birdcage and use the old stick and string trick to catch your birds rather then stress them out to that amount

Yeah I need to work out another strategy for the final 3 zebs. I might take the net in and try and 'coax' them into it

Or I could wait until the gouldians are finished with their nest, remove them and then grab the remaining zebs. I would then have an empty aviary that enables me to change things around such as new perches etc. then return the gouldians.

Walked by the aviary this morning and heard the distinctive high pitch cheep of baby birds. Quickly shone a torch into the opening of the nesting box and there is mum Gouldian and 3 little beaks  That's a pretty impressive effort as they kicked a pair of zebs out of the nesting box and up until last week had a dozen zebs annoying them.
