This has so far been a season of environmental disaters. I see QFS is proactive in trying to help people who have suffered severe damage to their hobby in the recent floods.
It occurs to me that their are fire victims, flood victims and storm victims all over the country.
A coordinated approach would be good.
This is an ideal thing for a national body like AFA, or NFSA to set up: a coordinated disaster response fund/ team/ group to give people a focus in hard times to seek help.
VAC had a research fund that could be accessed by researchers for funds with strings attached to help aviculture. Unfortunately, it gave money to one researcher who could not fullfil the requirements so I'm not sure if it still runs.
A similar entity could be set up to hold a database of helpers, regions etc plus a reserve of funds for distribution.
It would need to be run by a formal group so that the usual safeguards against misuse of money/data are observed. I am a member of the NFSA here in Australia but have not heard from them since the Healesville conference when I joined. I Radon't have access to AFA anymore.
I rave alot. This is probably highly impracticable and quite fanciful.
Before anyone says "your suggestion, your move "' i am happy to be a part of it under conditions as described. If there are ideas that involve manpower, I do believe the initiator should always be prepared to do some (however small) part, not leave it all to others.

Tom your last comment says it all,a mammoth task it would be and after all, the people who have lost everything, the last thing on their minds would be their HOBBY of keeping birds until they get back on their feet,it could be months/years and some just might not chance it again with this weird weather. You're right, of course, Craig. It's good that someone adds balance to my pie-eyed optimism

Yes there are, and this was forecast many moons ago with global warming , extreme weather.Look at my location, we`ve had record wet, record cold, record hot and half the bottom end of the territory burn twice in 2 years. You lot dont hear much about it because there is little , if any, loss of life and little damage to dwellings. Its a natural cycle and Qld/NSW has copped the worst of it a few years in row.
A reserve of funds to cope with it would be great and i volunteer to be the keeper of cash.

Was talking to a lady who was hit bad by the storms , she is restocking with some of my birds.
She was very lucky to have had insurance on her livestock so restocking and rebuilding her averies ,which ended up in the next property and barely recognizable isn't going to be so hard financially .
Just a thought for the future I guess to check out what insurance companies can do for people with birds .
Needless to say its a very emotional time for her as she cleans up .

That's a very good point, jusdeb. It's worth checking insurance covering structures such as outhouses and aviaries, feed such as stored seed and also aviary furnishings.
Some people were wiped out and birds might be last in their priorities, but others have limited but hurtful damage done by these "natural" disasters (arson, climate change, release of dam water play a part too). These latter people may not need much help.
The birds themselves are probably the only things that are difficult to insure and/or replace.
