Has anyone ever used Cotton Grass in Aviaries? I'm thinking of buying some seeds, it might be easier to collect then the Saw Thistle cotton which is much safer to give birds for nest building then the Cotton.

I still use the original cotton wool purchased from the super market. I either tease some out for them to collect or put some between
two pieces of bird wire and they actually pull small amounts out each time.

I've not used cotton-grass but I've tried a couple of other sources of plant lint. Kapock - I got mine from the seed pods but I'm sure there are sources available like cushion or toy stuffing at Spotlight and I've also harvested seed-heads of Imperata cylindricata (blady grass) picked at flowering so that the fluff stayed put on the heads. The birds readily took both but seems to prefer the blady grass. I'm not sure that you could grow it in an aviary though.

What a great idea - blady grass heads. We get plenty of it around here after burning off/bushfires. Never thought to use it before, will now though. Thanks.
