Agree with Sam...Swap one for a hen....Some Stars are very jumpy...you only have to look at nest and they will desert be extremely lucky to breed them in a cabinet/cage....Oh and Happy Birthday... :bun:

I have never had a pr breed in a box.Although I have never tried cabinet breeding. It is annoying when some people think a pr is two birds not a cock and hen. Privitely they sell for around $60.but at a pet shop $80 would be reasonable for a pr.

Thanks everyone.

I spoke to the breeder this morning. He was not at all happy that I was questioning his expertise. I wont go into all he said but about the birds he said that "The birds I got had more colour than usual and he has no doubt at all that they are a pair, none". He said I could go and get one that is "less coloured if it pleases me but it would be a waste of time". It is a 3 hour trip so its easier for me to buy a hen from a breeder that is closer to me that I have gotten some of my other birds from.

He told me yesterday after I asked him about breeding and explained the cage I have, that it would be more than suitable to breed them in, and that they are very easy to breed, no problem at all. Yet when I got home I search Google for everything I could find only to read they are very shy and nervous when breeding, and need lots of privacy. I have a big open cage with no privacy at all. So, just another thing I got duped on. He also sold me a breeding box to breed them in.

But after all that has been said and done, they are beautiful birds and if they are not for breeding then that is fine with me, it's not the end of the world.

Mands.

He is definitely not a breeder. It is just inconceivable that a breeder of stars was unable to sex them. It's not like they're young ones with little colour showing. Everyone on AFF spotted they were cocks from your first photo. And if he in fact knows how to sex them then he's simply a liar.

Clearly he has no idea whatsoever. He was just trying to sell you a few extras - simple as that. Such dopes should be named and shamed.

Indeed, look on the bright side! I'm sure someone on AFF will find you a hen or two within reasonable distance from home.

I see now in the pictures what you guys are telling me about the colour under the beak. It is plain obvious to me now, why not a man who has been breeding for over 40 years?

I think he just didn't care enough to bother sexing them for me. He was not happy with me this morning for questioning him so I definitely wont be taking any more 'replacement' birds from him. Very disappointing.

It is not like they WERE going to breed anyways. I did ring around today though, and the best I could do was a hen for $50.

I am seeing the bright side though. They are beautiful no matter what. So, I am happy at the end of the day.

Thanks heaps for your support everyone.

Come on all you Melbournian finchos, surely someone has a hen or two for Mands?
If you were in Sydney you'd be swamped with hens by now!

Happy birthday!
Not to worry, sometimes things like this happen, one thing you can be sure of, you wont let it happen to you again

This section has loads of topics on stars that might help with your new purchases.

This particular page (last post) has a good pic of a pair so you can compare the coloured face mask on cocks and hens.

Also some comments on keeping breeding pairs of different head colours together
