just noticed yesterday a new nest near the entrance door to the inside shelter.first off i thought it might belong some of the dilute tri-colour parrot finches. i had a quick peek and out flew the pied fire finch cock - eggs in nest about 4 or 5 in total.
i then sat outside the aviary watching the breeding pairs of fawn pied diamond splits etc - 3 pairs have young in nest. just happen to look across at the new nest and the one and only orange breast hen went inside.
a couple of hours later i took some silver beet and soaked seed to the aviary. once inside out flew the orange breast hen from the same nest and a few minutes later she was replaced by the pied fire finch cock bird.
last time something like this happened was when the blue cap cock bird x with the grizzle pied cordon hen
pied fire finch cock x orange breast hen

Is he the only fire finch in the avairy? Or more precisely, are there no fire finch hens available to him? Sounds like you should be advertising for mates of the correct variety for this couple of finches.

i have approx 10 pair of pied fires in that aviary. unfortunately he is not interested in his own kind - so what gives me the right to break up true love. i had a similar drama with the fawn pied diamonds.
on the other hand i could do both of them in - but again i'm not like that either

Fair enough, always a good idea to give them the option. But if he has the choice and has made it. I would not knock them off either. I have had birds cross when they shouldn't too, and I kept the birds and the young as well. But did not let them breed, the young, hybrids that is. As for the parents, I broke the couples up by putting them into different avairys. Only have Fire finch cocks myself at the moment, so hopeing they don't go chatting up other birds while waiting for me to source mates for them.

Please refer to my reply to Fate of unwanted birds, and many many posts over several years, before sending me a PM. Because I suggested getting the birds mates of their own kind if they did not have access to same.

I have a even stranger situation, after a rat got in to my aviary and killed 20+ finches ie most of them.
I was left with a Orange breast hen, Painted cock, and a Bango don't know the sex.
Now all three of these birds have formed a trio and go about their business building nest and taking turns sitting on the eggs (always clear).
At one point they even took over a Zeb nest and successfully raised 2 young all taking turns incubating and feeding.
Now I know this may be frowned upon by some but I'm happy to let them be until I can get the appropriate partners for them.

If they are only raising other birds chicks it does not sound like a big problem. But of course getting them mates of their own type is always the go.
