I have used collected phalaris heads and stored them for months. Fed in dry, golden brown form have found some finches will eat the seed heads, but generally only use it as a snack. The cocksfoot, even less so, likewise with the rye grass. Seems to be only a short period of time in the plant's growth and the finch's development stage that rye and cocksfoot is eaten. I guess a matter of substitution - if there is something better to eat.........
