Me girl drop her egg

As the title says my Zeb female layed an egg. But she must have been on one of the perches as it was busted in half on the cage floor. I wondered why she had a sad look when I removed there cover. Wasn't till I went to change there seed I noticed the egg.

As I had posted in another thread, not sure if I am ready to breed my pair yet.

This happens with my Stars Im not sure if she is just too young to know to sit on the nest or if they accidently throw the egg out of the nest when they pull out straw and feathers.

I have given my Zeb's a nest as they were back in the mating mode. So far they just look at the nest & will not go near it.

Well today my pair is not so scared of there nest. But still don't want anything to do with it. Tonight when I got home I found my hen had laid an egg but dropped it on the ground. Hopefully they will figure out they need to put there eggs in the nest ?

If the latest egg didn't also break, you could pop it in the nest as a hint to them.

She must have just dropped it as I went over to there cage 20 minutes later & there was no sign of the broken egg. Maybe tomorrow she will figure out what to do after a sleep.

My pair have decided there new nest is sorta safe. They have been busy checking it out. But I havn't seen then go inside, but some feathers have found there way out. So someone has been in there. One can only hope they decide its a good residence. And give me a family.

One question is the placement. I have put it lower in the cage near there seed dish. Would I be better to move it higher ? Near one of there swings they like to play on ?

They're Zebs, it shouldn't matter.

Now if mine would just stop trying to get out of the breeding cage and back into the aviary.

Here is a picture of my pairs home. I was really surprised the flash never scared them. As I said before they are my pets & live inside in the kitchen family room. Not exactly the same situation others here have.

They look like they have a lovely home , my Quarrions live inside ( they dont know they are birds ) and they have raised young who are now out in aviaries.
They may prefer the nest higher and I also have found that the way the nest faces makes a difference , my bengalese wouldnt go near the nest ( same as yours ) until I turned it sideways , for some reason they prefer it now.
Try it another way if you like but then I think maybe leave them be , too many interferences can put them off also if your up later than sunset perhaps they would like somewhere away from the family noise and movement ...just a maybe coz they do get use to family routine when indoors.
