I have recently purchased a number of zebra finches. They have had nests made and a few eggs but I've noticed that the eggs are either missing or the whole nest box has been emptied of nesting material. Im not sure if this is an individual bird causing the problem or others are just protective of their area around their nest.
I have thought that it could be mice...
What are your thoughts on what or how I can fix this problem??

Thanks

What makes you think that mice could be the problem?

Without photos and more info concerning aviary dimensions, how many birds including male/female ratios, available nest sights and nesting materials in aviary makes it very hard to answer you questions.

If I was to guess it Sounds like your Zebs are destroying each others nests for the lack of good nesting material or nest sights. Place a lot more (heaps) long cut grasses in aviary, more nest boxes and place more brush on walls.

Ok sorry. Here's some more info:
- 8 pairs (plus 1 extra female)
- had over 12 nest boxes, but took some done as every time I put material in them they took it out.
- no sure on dimensions, but it's not small at all.
- it's a planted aviary so the birds can collect material from the plants.
- plus I supply a lot hay/grass that I supply to them.

Thanks.

With 8 pairs I'd supply 20 nest boxes, loads of fine grasses as nesting material, as a start.

I would supply them nest boxes, but they seem to empty the nesting materials and leave them empty.....

Where is the nesting material going? Sounds like they need a lot more to me...and I wouldn't put it in nest boxes...leave it where they can get at..

I normally place some hay in a pile on the branch. They also can go pull apart a pile they I supply to the quails.

But I'll go and give them a lot more. They seem to be settled down now.

There are some very experienced finch breeders in Armidale, not far from you, who could give you some local advice. I could provide contacts if you wish.

Taking nesting materials from the nest to put into another nest does not mean you need to remove the empty nest. Another bird may choose to use it later. Try giving them a mix of nesting materials. Hay is a bit hard to weave, so add grasses. Preferably in mixed lengths so they can get weaving. And more is always better.
