You cant "not believe" in something that exists. You can choose not to do it, but Austerity diets exist in many degrees, and they DO work with certain birds and if done correctly.[/quote]
David,i do believe in austerity diets but in most cases it just doesn't work with mixed collections where different species breed at different times of the year and you are supplying all the goodies for them to breed.
Supplying all these goodies to birds that don't breed in Winter usually forces them to breed with disastrous results and vice versa. Most breeders keep their mixed collections in large open aviaries so it is necessary to keep up there breeding diets all year round to please all the species,i think this is what elferoz is on about.
The person that started all this had 1 or 2 species in aviaries that breed at similar times and can be controlled with austerity diets and a lot of followers tried it without success and have reverted back to full on breeding diets all year round.

That was what I was referring to.
As I am limited for space I mix my aviaries to get the maximum potential out of them all year round.
I get the concept of the austerity diet but I dont believe in it because my birds breed up a storm all year round without it.
The only birds I am struggling with are the Siskins but who isn't this year.
I think relaxed feeding routines are dangerous. I think the minimum would be once daily to ensure there is ample food and water and that everything else is topped up.
Maybe when I am retired I will have more time, as a 30 year old with a 4 yr old son, pregnant boss and psycho Labrador I would be hard pressed spending anymore than 30 mins on the birds during a normal working week.
Like most things this is an opinion poll based on ones experience. My experience has shown me consistent diet all year produces the goods for my outdoor mixed aviary.
