heat wave

Just enduring the brissy heat wave. Thermometer placed in the shade on the deck peaked at 47.2C (suspect some radiant heat). So have just been up and replaced water in avairy misted roof and misted all aviary plants. Fingers crossed.
Hope others are ok.

Doing it tough up there. A friend in Brisbane has just misted down his aviaries, plants in the aviaries and the birds too. He said the birds never moved!
Last week we had the heat here in Adelaide. I doubled up a shade sail and put it over the aviaries and flipped the drop down blinds over the top too. That along with some hosing down and water with blocks of ice in helped my birds get through the worst of it.

All good here in Childers... we have had high 30's and low 40's for the last 4 days.... Have not lost any finches....I only mist them with water if wings slightly out and mouth open....otherwise if they're sitting quietly, I just leave them alone, they're stressed enough..

yes agree less intervention the better. However when birds are getting down low/or panting you cant but help do something for them. I think I am going to look at a roll down shade cloth blind to protect the western wall even though it is a walk way and provide a buffer it does heat up the aviary. All good no birds lost.

Good thing my daughter and her partner are used to WA heat, as they are due to move to Brisbane in about a month. For birds and people alike, shade, water, peace and quiet.

Wow,45 degs in Geelong today at present it's still 40.Changed water every couple of hours and left them alone but the white corri and sisal paper has proved its self by alot lower temperatures in side the aviaries with the help of a hose down every 2 hrs.
With another 3 days of this,i don't know of what has succumbed in nests and not going any where near them till at least the coming weekend where the temps are to be in the mid 20's. Craig

Last night I put up the shade cloth and extra water dishes to combat this heat wave but when I got home from work this arvo a pair of Cubans are missing and all the BF parrot finches were dead on the floor, 8 in total.
All the other birds are ok but very hot, except the flamin pictorellas which haven't look better
Dam shame!!

I was lucky only 39 degrees here.Since I was home I gave the wire a quick spray with water.Cant say they came flying in to get wet as it wasn't to hot here.I had planed on cleaning the avairies but it was just to hot.At least I got the sink connected in the birdroom and moved the dishwasher out the shed into the birdroom aswell. So I still achieved somthing for the day.No doubt the birds are happy I didn't disturb them to much.

Sorry to hear that brooksy. In early January 2013 on that record Sydney / Newcastle day only birds I lost were tri-coloured PF. Must be less tolerant of the extreme heat.

Zebs managed to still one a few days later, however it obviously had permanent damage from the heat. It was never quite right and died at a young age.

Believe it or not I had 4 red Cheeked Cordon chicks fledge today even though we hit 43 degrees here!
