I suspect that they are still in juvenile plumage, having only just left the nest, wait until the adult moult, then you'll know what you have on your hands. ;)

with the genetic make up of the zebra finch these days, the old zebbie has become some what a mystery bag when you purchase them , the colours have all been mixed so the only way of knowing what you have is to purchase from a breeder who can show you the parents. the charcoal form of the zebbie has no spots on the tail, so your birds could be split for them but who knows welcome to the world of lucky dip............pete

Awww you're no fun.
I have lots of Zebs that look normal :D but I breed for what I feel like at the time so they are all split for something. :)
And I never worry about what they look like till the grey of the beak is at least half turned to adult colouring.
Like Pete said just enjoy the lucky dip.

I think you will find the hen was ready to go back to nest and plucked all the white feathers out of the tail, this happens quite often.

Garry,

I disagree - the feathers on the tail are black striped, not black feathers and white feathers. the zebs would need to be pretty handy with the nail scissors! :?
