When I was a youngster, our finch-keeping was conducted on on a very tight budget. I never got to experience many of the more exotic Australian species (I used to stare longingly into the Gouldian cage at my local bird supplier... if only). As a result, I spent a lot of time with the good 'ol zebra finch, selectively breeding for specific mutations. My most prized were my all-blacks (as I called them back then) which were black-breasted mutants with black ear patches and no white underneath at all.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some zebs again (a great starter bird for the kids) and once I'm totally happy with my aviary setup, I'll gradually introduce some more expensive species. I love a natural aviary with lots of live plants and a partial dirt floor, so I'm busy drafting plans at the moment and scrounging as many building materials as I can.
I have a bird supplier not far away (Swan Valley Birds), but I'm interested to know where other Perth birdo's go for their supplies?

When you say a partial dirt floor, what is the remainder? I'm building my first planted avairy and cannot decide on the ground cover. Some of it will be planted but the rest was orinslly going to be the lawn I am building over. I have heard that a layer of crushed gravel can work but it has to look good as that is my brief

By the time you have the avairys planned and built you will be able to access the Classifieds on here, so you will be all set.

Excellent news about the classifieds! I looked in the bird shop on the weekend, and was a little startled at some of the prices that I saw. I noted that prices on gumtree are around half that of the shop, which was a little more palatable. I like to be able to go to a breeder's home and see the environment in which birds have been bred and raised. Little cages at overcrowded shops don't really do it for me. I'd be more than happy to support my local forum frequenters!

Not sure if you have joined any clubs yet, but the Finch Society of WA has 3 Auctions a year and the Avicultural Society of WA have a table sale last Sunday of the month.
