When I took the cover off my quarantine birds this morning I found a very sick finch sitting in the food bowl shivering. He is missing some feathers on the back of his neck and seems to be twitching every so often. I've brought him inside and put him in the travel cage in the bathroom which I've got at around 27 degrees (all I could think of) He's got food and water in shallow dishes (drowned too many sick animals in the past). Anyone got any suggestions on what to do to help a sick finch on a public holiday???

What you have done is good. But if you have some "Spark" you can give that would be good. Hope the little one perks up.

Thanks for your help. I found two more on the cage floor after getting the first one settled and quickly brought them inside (although the last one was a bit more difficult to catch). The second two we're happy to drink the formula and quickly recovered. I think the first one was too far gone when I found it. It died about 30min after I brought it inside
. The other two recovered and I put them back outside around lunch time. I've covered all but one side of the cage to keep them warm and are watching them constantly from the window. They seem to be fine. No idea what could have happened to them!

Have you had cold winds recently? Protection from cold winds is the most important thing for little finches. Or could you have a predator scaring the ------------ out of them?

We have had cold winds. The main aviary has a high solid fence one side and plenty of trees planted around it, there's barely a breeze there on a windy day. I put the quarantine birds in the pergola as its as far as possible from the others. Its normally very sheltered but the wind will blow in when coming from the wrong direction. I put a cover on them overnight though and the first one was sick when I took the cover off. Having said that it maybe the wind came up underneath as the cage is on a stand. We're planning to build a new aviary for the finches up the same end of the yard so I'll have to take this into consideration when building.
