Hi all,
Very new to finches, put together my first aviary several months back (3m x 3m) for the kids then took them shopping for some birds, ended up with 1 pair of standard gouldians to start with. By the end of the week we had 2 pair of gouldians, 2 pair of white breasted gouldians, 4 quails and 1 pair of painted finches. A week ago we added a pair of bleu cordons. All was good, now they are breeding like mad, have gouldians hatched in 3 nests, eggs in another, painted's are on eggs now and the male cordon is busy lifting heavy objects to try and impress his mate. Now im starting to wonder what next, all these birds are going to fledge, i only have one aviary and i dont want any inbreeding. I will be needing heaps of advise in the next few months. I have already spent coutless hour on this site veiwing old posts. Time to make decisions on the possibility of more aviaries, which birds stay and go to Keep the gene pool good ect. They say smoking is addictive, these finches are way worse

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have things in place for the finches with them breeding so readily for you.
I say grab any available space you can in the garden while you can, easier to give it back than to get more once you see how addictive this hobby can be!

I don't want to be a wet blanket but getting them to nest is the easy part.
Getting the full clutch out onto the perch is the big step. Give them a good diet and
don't fiddle or interfere with the breeding birds as it will help to keep their stress level down.

My thoughts exactly E Orix, but i probably should be more involved with them. I know there are chicks in three boxes as the have been cheaping for the last few weeks and the other two i can see the hen in the boxes for the last few weeks, only coming out for short period of time so i am guessing they are on eggs. Because of my inexperience, i havent even opened the lids once to see how many have hatched for fear of turning off the parents. May have to check them soon as there could be unhatched eggs that need disposing off. Never had an animal that is so fragil befor, ringing them will be an experience.

Like everyone else says, time for avairy number 2 and possibly 3 as well. Keep up the greens to the parent birds, and don't worry too much about unhatched eggs till the young are ready to ring.
