Went to check my birds just now and drop the clear cafe blinds for the night as it's cold, wet and windy. Discovered a gouldian chick just fledged who wasn't there an hour ago out in the open part of the aviary. Thought in view of the weather and because he was by himself that he'd be better off back in the nest with the others for the night. Poked him in and held my hand over the opening for 5 or so minutes as they were all flapping around. All seemed quiet and settled so took my hand away and he came straight back out and by this time couldn't see well enough to perch.
Poked him back in, Took off my boot and sock and poked that in the opening. They 'll all be toasty warm but hope it was the right thing to do. Will have to go down early and take out the sock!

Lucky it wasn't one of my socks, they would have all suffocated with the smell :?

Cheers and good luck, it is going to be another miserable night

I've done the same thing with a Gouldian fledgling a few months back - worked fine.

That's good to know. If they'd all been out or he'd been down in the roosting area I would have left him. Just as well girl socks don't smell isn't it!! Does mean no sleep in in the morning though.

That can't be right... they all survived the night, but popped out like corks from a bottle when I took the sock out at sunrise. Five in total but one roosting on the ground tonight and the other 4 in the more exposed end of aviary so hope all's well.
